| All About Africanized Bees |
Africanized honey bees, which arrived in Arizona in 1993, can pose a very real danger to people and pets.
These bees generally pose little danger. Honey bees become a concern when they begin their reproductive cycle and form a swarm and later start a new nest.
Africanized bee nests are easily provoked into stinging attacks involving large numbers of bees.
The most common time that honey bee activity is observed is when bees are foraging and collecting food from flowers. |
A typical newly formed swarm or nest can have 5,000 to 10,000 workers. Left unchecked a nest can grow to over 40,000 workers. To prevent a stinging incident, bee swarms or nests must be eliminated as soon as possible.
